It's not the best distortion in the world, no. It's serviceable
though and best used when you need a generic, transistor-style 
harshness, to me. 

I don't think full spectrum patches are really the best sound
to distort either. Try patches with less bass and a decent 
amount of treble, and not much going on (e.g. a one-osc patch).
Square waves / PWM waves pretty much won't be touched by 
distortion, you want to stick with the sine / triangle / sawtooth.

If I can, I have a Line6 POD that I use for distortion. :) When I
record at home, I've used a Lexicon MPX 1 or a TC Electronics M300
in place of the digital effects, sometimes.
