Because turning on / off equipment may also damage
equipment over time, depending on how good your 
power supply is and how thoroughly it prevents the
initial power "spike".

I think today's electronic equipment is designed
so this isn't an issue as much. I've had one spike
wipe half the A6 memory card but I'm thinking this
was a bit more unusual of a circumstance. (Just 
remember to back things up!) Some older synths
really had rotten power supplies, much worse than
the A6 could possibly ever be. So I imagine the
"rumor" was started particularly for paranoid 
owners of these machines.
