Moderating entrants would solve the problem of robots going in and grabbing 
information from the members database. The problem really isn't Yahoo's fault, it's 
the damn robots. Mailing lists like Yahoo are a good target.

I've seen Yahoo groups at any rate go strictly to moderated posts with a restricted 
user database because of the SPAM bots.

It's a valid alternative with an active moderator. :)
