Larry,
Sonar CAN control NRPNs. NRPNs use two 7 bit numbers to increase the
resolution from 128 steps to 16,385... They show up as MSB (Most
Significant Byte) and LSB (Least Significant Byte). MSB select a specificy
block of 128 steps, and LSB selects the specific step. Thus, if you look at
NRPN information and are not familiar with it, it will look strange because
the MSB goes up, but the LSB keeps dropping to zero when you reach the next
group of 128. Also, the numbering scheme is not quite as easy as a CC
number, you need two controllers to just select the NRPN, and then you need
two controllers for data entry (MSB,LSB)... To top it all off, you can also
have data increment/decrement controllers both working on top for even finer
control.
I am not in my studio currently, but I haven't had any trouble with midi
control of my A6 (which uses NRPN because of it's high resolution). You can
simply hit record and record knob movements straight into Sonar, and
depending on your PANEL settings on the A6, the playback will either be the
same or steppy (make sure you have higher resolution for sweeps). Sonar
groups the MSB and LSB together to automatically facilitate 16,384 steps,
and I believe you can simply edit it like a regular Control Change with the
exception that you need to pinpoint the NRPN parameter MSB and LSB. Here's
a link on the cakewalk site that explains it futher:

I haven't tested NRPNs since and earlier version of Sonar, so I will test it
out when I get to the studio later on.
