Alpha units cannot accept the release and later OS, as the voice boards 
and ASICs are vastly different from later units.

Beta units did need a hardware upgrade to accept new OS but the voice 
board and ASICs are same as release units.

I've had a beta unit since Oct 2000.  Mine arrived with some tacked on 
components on the internals which is expected of pre-release units, and 
I was told that this fix made it equal to release units.

And it hasn't had a tune-up since ;)
