it should certainly light up when the ribbon is fingered
and the hold button should act like a Sample & Hold and hold the 
most recent value and not "freeze" the ribbon like yours does.

my guess is that your ribbon is not functioning (properly). have you 
checked the connectors yet? they seem to be the Achilles' Heel of 
our beloved Andromeda 

why two Hold buttons? besides the obvious benefit of always 
having one withing reach, there was at one time some talk about a 
possible Ribbon Split feature that might be implemented in "a 
future O/S update"... pigs might fly, too
