Here's an idea to consider - I have and PREFER older digital reverbs. I
REALLY prefer chambers, plates, and actual spaces, but these are always
limited for space/money reasons. However I think the actual things (rooms,
chambers) are more musical because they are "natural" - they have the
characteristics of real sound bouncing around in real space, or - on plates
and springs - a mechanical action still regulated by the laws of physics.
This is what we try to copy on artificial reverb devices. Why? Because our
EARS like to hear sounds with "natural" shapes, overtone structures, decays,
etc. Listen to the echo in a canyon, church, or staircase; not really many
highs or deep lows - much stronger mids. This is the sound of real-world
reverbs. Modern devices try to be HiFi and show that they pass ALL
frequencies without coloration...
So - my older digi-verbs have LESS high end, due to converters and sampling
rates and so on. So they have a"warmer" sound, but more importantly, a more
natural one. We CAN roll off the highs and lows on most new digi-verbs, but
it is an electronic attenuation, not as "natural". Old verbs do it
artificially too, but even their electronic "faults" that cut highs and lows
seems more like nature.
Experiment: try putting your reverb SEND through a channel EQ, or outboard
EQ. Take off the highs above about 4k and lows below 400 Hz (any ranges near
that). To me, it seems to mix much better and interfere less with the quality
of the original sound. This is a trick they used on EVERYTHING done at Abbey
Road - make sure the reverbs are NOT "full-fidelity"; it's not needed!
