Have a look at page 186 of the manual, it's pretty concise. There are two main 
ext input modes: one inputs a mono source into all 16 voices and the other 
reserves voices 15 and 16 for an external stereo source. It sounds like you are 
using the latter but want to use the former, just hit the v 1-16 button in the 
external inputs panel.
