Hm. Off the top of me head I can't remember if it's actually possible to have 8-bit values in a SysEx dump. A stray 0xF7 would signify end-of-sysex, I suppose. Maybe you could get around that by sending a length-value first, but perhaps some sequencers cannot be counted on to continue receiving after a 0xF7.
And if that is the case, then some some coding scheme is needed to fit 8-bit values in 7-bit bytes. Alesis' implementation is not entirely illogical, then.
