  Perhaps there are hardware optimisations that make this the preferred way
to do things.  I think that, e.g, the weirdnesses of the DX7's sysex are
dictated by the dumps following the register maps for the voice hardware.
I know that back when I was designing a wavetable synth the hardware had a
register map that looked quite bizarre to the software but was the natural
way to do things.
