I picked up a Distressor compressor recently -
it's a compressor that can mimic a lot of vintage valve, VCA and opto compressor
sounds, but without the transient smearing of valves

I fed an old Andromeda recording through it, and it certainly does the biz!
original, then 6:1 compression with Dist 2 mode - which adds some 2nd harmonic distortion
sorta like a sweet valve like tone
then with different faster attack setting.
remeber the Distressor signal has gone another D/A and A/D stage
and the orignal is just a wav file on my computer!
smoothed out and punched, with a sweet tone
watch the word wrap

The original wav file shows a bigger difference than the mp3 :)
certainly a high quality compressor! None of the mush you get with cheap stuff
the bypassed signal sounds very close to the pre sub-insert original
