Typically, you need a box that will send a SOLID voltage while the guitar is 
playing. I'm sure you can buy modules from MOTM, Doepfer, Blacet, etc (modular 
synth companies). Or the easy one is the MoogerFooger Lowpass filter pedal. 
If you just plug some kind of (strong) guitar signal in - it fluctuates, like a 
wave up and down, which is not good. You want a strong "up" signal when you 
play, and a clean "down" signal when you don't. 

Then, the filters and amp will know when to do a nice "key on"/"key off" with 
your guitar playing. It will still take some learning to get a clean signal, 
but it works pretty well...
