well, i took delivery of my brand new A6 yesterday. i had thought of getting a used one or perhaps a b-stock, but in the end decided to get a new unit.

after reading the horror stories and A6 slagging that has recently been on AH, i am pleased to say that my unit tuned perfectly on initial power up, and what functions i was able to test in 5 hours seemed to work without hiccups.

i don't think i can give a very fair assessment of the unit at this time, because of my limited experience so far, and the fact that i am smitten right now. i can't stop looking at it; every time i passed it in the hallway this morning i had to stop and stare for a second- it's borderline unhealthy... :-)

i loaded several of the user banks from the web to the PCMCIA card, and i CAN say that just going through those sounds tells me that this thing has the capability to make all the sounds i have always been after. i think it sounds wonderful in fact. i literally had to liquidate my entire studio to afford this thing, and at this point i don't regret my decision (although to be fair i have to mention that i am still in the "love at first site" stage.) i have never owned any of the flagship VCO synths (JP8, M12, OBXa, P5), so i can't really compare them to the A6, but i CAN say with confidence that with regards to sonic capability and versatility, it trounces everything i sold (P600, AX80, AX60, JX10, Juno 1).

the knobs do feel a little wobbly, and i would hope for better keyboard action out of such an expensive synth. my old JX10 had a much nicer keyboard in fact. but, i can live with these things i suppose considering all the good points.

i haven't gotten into mix mode just yet, so i am yet to experience any of the bugs that i have read about. we'll just have to cross that bridge...

so, whatever social life i had, i can say with complete confidence that it is now gone. thank christ i broke up with my girlfriend, she would have never been able to compete... :-)
