Interesting - maybe the A6 does not like you to work with the edit
buffers directly. I did notice in the manual that you can set different
"modes" for handling incoming sysex data. In "Normal" mode, the
incoming dump is stored to the user bank (or a card bank, if present).
I'm assuming this means it uses the original bank and program number as
stored within the mix data itself (p. 15 of the sysex document) - not
within the sysex header. In "Here" mode, the incoming data will
overwrite the program/mix currently in the display. It wasn't clear as
to whether this means it is stored permanently in the specified bank or
not (I'm guessing it does). In "Bank" mode, you can use soft knob 1 to
select where you want the incoming data to be stored.
This seems to imply that the A6 does some further "adjusting" of the
incoming sysex data and may not allow you to populate the edit buffer
directly. At any rate, it looks like this is something that will have
to be sorted out through experimentation. Not to slight Alesis, but
I've never had much luck getting a detailed answer from their tech
support in the past, and when I did, it was often incorrect.
I do find it difficult to believe that they wouldn't allow you to
populate the edit buffers directly since you'd never be able to load an
external sound without storing it to a bank first. That just doesn't
seem right.
Just one other thought (I'm sure you probably checked this, just being
thorough) - when you said that the name doesn't get updated, did you try
switching to a different page of the display and then back to the main
Mix page to see if the main page just needed to be redrawn?
