[A6] A6 filter wierdness

Thanks for the advice - I'm still a bit mystified as to the filter
behavior - seems to me there must be some control under the hood I'm
missing.  Later on I will point out some specific patches which seem to
behave oddly.

this may seem a bit dim but I haven't actually noticed a default program - I
got my machine used so it may be deleted - where can I find it?
