I haven't talked to the design team, so this is only a guess....

If you look at the circuit board, it's installed where it's supposed to
be.  My thought is that it makes it real easy to find the MIDI IN jack
(versus out, thru, etc), just by reaching around and feeling with your hand.

Since the jack info is not printed on the top panel, and the synth is often
installed on some kind of stand, I appreciate the consideration.  I just wish
there was an easy way to indicate the L/R output pair.
