I think surface mount and multi-layer circuitboards probably don't have much
to do with the sound, but the ASICs might.  Surface mount is just another
way of soldering (as opposed to through-hole).  Circuitboards are just wires
embedded in plastic (or such).  Am I wrong?  Thanks
