Partly, lowering the sustain still leaves the attack phase problematic in
how it distorts sound. There's no single solution , because it depends on
the sound you are going for. But if you are going for a little more snap,
you need to make sure you don't overload the pre-filter mix for starters.
I'm sure you've seen the suggestion to keep the VCOs down below 30-40 for
less distortion. This distortion automatically makes the sound more
mid-heavy and causes difficulties in getting a nice attack.
Next, at the VCA 3, make sure that you push down all the levels down to
something a little more managable. You can use offset for this under LEVEL,
or just manual adjust each level seperately. I usually shoot for the
highest possible level to be below 95. By default, the A6 sets itself to
100.05 for the intial attack and it hard to make this sound good. You can
then set your decay 1 stage fairly short, make the slope one of the
logrithmic choices, and set your sustain slightly lower. With a little bit
of tweaking you'll hear a much nicer 'punch' to your basses and sounds that
require more life near the beginning. You can also use decay 2 level and
time to further tailor a more pronounced attack to sustain segment.
Envelope 2, is also important to set properly. Since it's use is mainly for
VCF ENV, you need to make sure there is also a little bit of snappiness in
the attack to sustain segment. The default program for the A6 doesn't have
the greatest envelope for making certain snappy sounds. I solved this
problem by devoting a couple of programs just to common configurations that
I use, ie. Bass-punch, Bass-smooth, Bass-gate.
To sum it up, Yes, you can get away without using D1 and D2 and setting
sustain. Just make sure that your offset is put into the negatives for more
sonic room.
