I do see the sound as different. Analog is (get ready) easier to make more
"retro" sounding! :) It's also can do some tricks that VA can't. (Vice
versa, as well - VA can do tricks analog can't.)
I see the idea "rig" if one (well, I :) ) was a full-time pro musician as
having the most versatile lineup in order to get maximum gig points. One
that would work for me is a good RA synth (like the A6), a good VA synth
(like the Virus), a good sampler/digital workstation combo (say a Triton),
maybe a full sampler if you need the poly or power, and a B3 emulator (Nord
Electro, say). Throw in a synth or two that you feel real expressive with,
that you don't really need stylistically (like, for me, a JD-800 :) ) and
you have your "idea rig". The rest of the synths are merely for bonus points
on Internet mailing lists. :) At that point, you can pick a tool easily and
make it work.
Yes, you have those on AH and other places that say, oh, thou shalt use
analog only. I see that as saying, "here is the style of music I prefer". I
concur with that attitude sometimes, but if one was a pro, though, I would
think being stuck up would get you less gigs. :) I want what sounds good.
Anyways, that's just me. I have no VA myself. No project has presented
itself where I need one yet, though. For instance, a Virus would not be so
idea in one of the projects I'm involved in, horror-punk. :)

[Because:
A) Devo sounds work well with punk, and it's easy to get Devo with the A6.
B) More importantly, the Andromeda looks cooler on stage. :) ]
