Agreed. I'll use anything I think sounds good.
For instance I'll sometimes use the filters in my E-mu sampler (they're
gutless but silky) or ReBirth drums or some patches from Reaktor. I use
a digital piano. Digital's a fact of life and a convenience. But I
wouldn't give it a large percentage of my sound or much of a foreground
role because I honestly dislike it intensely in large doses.
Some people like the sound of the Virus. There's no question it has
oodles of capabilities, as anything that's essentially a computer is
able to have. I just personally dislike the sound of the Virus, so it
wouldn't inspire me.
But to be fair, frankly, sometimes even the A6 sounds like shit when
signal levels are a bit overloaded. I'm surprised that a slew of the
factory patches had that quality. But when it's at its creamiest, it
can be very, very inspiring.
I tend to measure analog sound by weight. Modular VCOs are very heavy,
A6 VCOs are welterweight, and digital oscillators have the weight and
density of paper. I get more pleasure out of sculpting a sound that's
heavy and dense.
